He wanted to make sure that I always check the previous exams because he knows that most of the exams come from previous exams and past papers. He studied in the US and told me that if it was not for the past exams and papers, he wouldn't have passed some courses. I followed his advice and always checked the previous exams of my current professors. And guess what? If not those exams, I wouldn't have been able to make A's in some courses! They really really help a lot... but as you said, one cannot completely depend on them! But still they play a role and if you do them all you're going to be fine...
